There’s been quite a bit of activity in the White House lately. I mean, there always is. It is a central hub of governmental activity, after all. But in recent weeks, there’s been a lot of additional hullabaloo, and the reason for it has nothing to do with good governance.

Decorators, carpenters, flooring specialists, and assorted other tradespeople have been pouring into the White House lately, all at the request of Speaker of the House, Nancy Violet Pelosi, so confident is she that both Trump AND Pence will be removed from office, leaving her to assume the role of President due to her position.

This seems overly presumptuous of her and leaves one to wonder why she is allowed to prepare for such changes, but apparently she is within her rights. Article 26-4a of the constitution allows “a potential incoming president to plan in advance for his residence to suit his needs upon arrival.” This has always been used only by incoming elected presidents after votes, but the language is vague enough that Pelosi’s lawyers were able to make a case before a federal judge that the “likelihood of her succession meets the requirements of the article.” So, while she’s not able to actually put through the changes, she is allowed to make the necessary plans and arrangements for them should she take the position. White House lawyers are currently appealing the ruling.
