After last week’s controversial announcement by rival network ABC television of a relaunch of the classic “I Love Lucy” sitcom starring Whoopi Goldberg, NBC has decided to follow suit by “updating” their own vintage program “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”, with none other than megawatt star Oprah Winfrey in the title role.
In the original outing, Moore starred as a character, Mary Richards, who worked In a television studio which served as a setting for hilarious and sometimes somber events. In the new iteration of the series, Oprah will be playing “Mary Tyler Moore”, a struggling single mother of five who finds herself employed at a strip club to make ends meet. Show producer Laqueesha Jackson told Variety about the vision of the endeavor:
“It’s really going to borrow from the original in portraying a strong, capable, independent woman making her way through life. Only on this case, she’s also dealing with being a black woman under an American white male patriarchy. Oprah is very excited about it, and has pondered giving every viewer of the premiere a new car. I think it’s really going to hit, yo.”
The new Mary Tyler Moore is due to begin production early next month. Other cast members include Danny Glover as Mary’s disgruntled boss “Lou”, Jamie Kennedy as “White Boy Ted”, and Queen Latifa as Mary’s comedic co-worker and neighbor “Rhoda.”
