In Dearborn, Santa Goes To Jail

Dearborn, MI is determined to eliminate any and all traces of the Christmas season from their city. Already gone are decorations on homes and businesses, carollers, and scenes of the nativity. And now Santa Claus is being eliminated.

There has been an exodus of Christians in this Michigan city. Churches have closed due to lack of attendance and there is nary a sign of Jesus to be found anywhere. But at Christmas time, the few of the faith that remain come out of hiding.

Those who celebrate the Yuletide have been seen dressing as Santa year after year and have been a welcome sight to weary Christian eyes. But this year something has changed. Santas are being thrown in jail.

Last month, Dearborn city council introduced the “Bad Elf Law” which forbids the “costuming as an resident of the North Pole by citizens and non-citizens alike in public spaces within the Dearborn city limits.” Violators of this measure are subject to a penalty of up to 30 days in jail or a $5000 fine.

Most residents approve of the law, saying that “obesity should not be encouraged” and the few that disapprove stay silent out of fear of being ostracized within their community.

Dearborn truly does appear to be lost. Certainly they have lost their own War on Christmas.
